PHOTOS BY OUR MOMS: DORCAS TILLMAN, PART 1

PHOTOS BY OUR MOMS: DORCAS TILLMAN, PART 1
We thought we'd just be posting up photos by the two principal DoubleButter moms, but as with most things around here lately the Tillmans want to be involved. Fine by us. So here are a pair of photos from Dorcas Tillman, a woman as sweet as her boys are sour, taken at the family retreat on Priest Lake, in Idaho. Dorcas has a weakness for the pretty, at least according to Clovis and Darnell, and we've got no problem with that. These lovely images make us anxious for summer and a lakeside vacation—hell we'd even suffer a week with the younger Tillmans as long as we get to spend some time with their charming mom. Beautiful photos, Mrs. Tillman. Send more when you've got the time.

WALNUT ARMADILLO NUMBER 1

WALNUT ARMADILLO NUMBER 1

It's nice to have a pressing reason to make a new piece. Otherwise you might never get around to it, you might continue to put it off. We gave ourselves a reason to build this walnut version of our Armadillo coffee table: to raise a bit of cash for the Architecture, Design and Graphics Department of the DAM.

So here's how we pitched it at Design After Dark, Skin (by the way, some wise fool dropped the cash and got the key): "Yes, a mini version of our Armadillo coffee table in walnut. Big deal, you say? Not so fast. Since the rules for this event stipulate that donated objects must fit inside a 12"x12"x12" vitrine, what were we supposed to do? So to tempt you to shed your skinflintiness we made the mini and added a wrinkle: if the winning bidder puts sufficient skin in the game and spends over $800 he or she gets a key to unlock a full-size walnut Armadillo (which we'll chain up somewhere in the wild). And not just any full-size walnut Armadillo—walnut Armadillo number 1, the first and original. Hell, it might be worth something someday."

PAD CANOPY PREVIEW

PAD CANOPY PREVIEW
As we've written, construction of the steel post-and-beam canopy over the pad outside our shop is underway—the first two sections are up and the first layer of roofing is down—so we thought we'd post up a few of the early stills from the time-lapse we're making to document the process. Much more will follow as work continues every day, though as is always the case some days are more productive than others.

HORSEHEAD STENCILING

HORSEHEAD STENCILING
Millard Tillman has been banging around the shop compound over the past few weeks leading the effort to erect the new canopy over the pad outside our shop. We'll post up the fruits of his and our labor soon—the structure is shaping up beautifully—but meantime we thought we'd share this little .gif of Millard applying the Horsehead Crating Company stencil to his welder. Something about this little file screams "Tillman!" to us—maybe it's the manic energy in service of some dubious goal. Plus that pink is a little slice of insanity, fitting for the Horsehead crew.

BYE BYE BIG BOY

BYE BYE BIG BOY
Big Boy, beloved cat of Mike and Ruth Altieri, Donna Altieri, Mike Thornton, and Dexter Thornton, died today. Big Boy was an Italian badass of the old school. He never backed down from anyone, regardless of size and species. But he was a sweet lover too, and that dapper grey sweatsuit he sported every day from his first to his last was never out of style. He retired to Boca early in life, then retired from retirement to Colorado. He was dearly loved and he will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, brother.
