DOUBLEBUTTER IS BETTER

As we’ve said from the very beginning, DoubleButter is better. Sure, that phrase and our sorta silly name originated with an offhand comment Dexter made about how he likes his English muffins (with both regular butter and peanut butter). But to us it’s taken on a broader meaning. It means that working here and designing and building furniture we love is better than any career alternative; it means that collaboration, from initial sketch to production, is better than working solo in a silo; it means that the happy mix of complementary materials can make good design great.

ALL WORK DONE EQUALLY WELL

As owners and operators of a small design and manufacturing company, we have our hands on every part of everything we do. We mean this quite literally when it comes to the built pieces we deliver every day: every part passes through our hands at some point. But figuratively every part of the business passes through our hands too—sales and customer service, invoicing and accounting, branding and graphic design. We approach all this with an attitude we think of as particularly Shaker: All work done equally well. Whether designing a chair, finishing a credenza, responding to a customer e-mail or being the model for our original logo, if our hands are on it we’re all in.

SOURCE IT WELL, BUY IT ONCE, KEEP IT FOREVER

We’ve long thought that the most sustainable piece of furniture is the one you never have to replace. That’s why every DoubleButter piece is built so solidly and why we fuss over form so relentlessly. We want you to keep your furniture forever—never broken, never out of style. But that doesn’t mean we’re indifferent to the origins of the raw materials we use to build our products. All of our hardwoods are domestically sourced from sustainable forests, our finishes are zero-VOC and our steel is from American mills which use post-consumer scrap steel as the principal feedstock. Renewable and biodegradable, natural and non-toxic, recycled and recyclable.

YOUR FURNITURE IS LESS PRECIOUS THAN THE LIFE YOU LIVE AROUND IT

We’ve got one basic rule we encourage everyone to follow with regard to our furniture: don’t worry. Don’t worry about scratches or dings, don’t worry about trying to maintain some level of perpetual, pristine “perfection.” Everything we make is made well and built to last a lifetime—something we stand firmly behind with our lifetime guarantee. So care for your furniture as you care for your own body. Use it without fear, clean it regularly and occasionally show it some extra attention. Over time, nicks and blemishes are inevitable, with our furniture as with ourselves—signs of age are signs of life.
