PAPERWHITE NARCISSUS
You could make a persuasive (but cold-hearted) argument that in summer the smell of paperwhites is a little cloying. Hell, you could argue that a photo of paperwhites in summer is a little cloying. But not now, no way. Force a few bulbs to bloom indoors in the dead cold of January and things seem a lot less bleak. Pure sweetness. Clovis got his pretty on for these photos and passed them on to cheer us up. Thanks, brother.
SICILY: LO ZINGARO
Another multi-shot panorama, this time of the Nature Reserve of Lo Zingaro in Sicily. You know you're deep in winter when you start resurrecting old photos of a sunshiny coastline. A friend of ours is dangling a trip to Mexico in front of us and it's getting harder and harder to think of reasons to resist.
DESIGN AFTER DARK PART 3: WALNUT ARMADILLO
Since the rules for the Denver Art Museum's Design After Dark event stipulate that donated objects must fit inside a 12" x 12" x 12" vitrine, what were we supposed to do? We couldn't just debigulate the full-size version since the rebigulator is on the fritz. So we made this miniature version and added a wrinkle: if the winning bidder puts sufficient skin in the game and bids over a certain amount (we'll figure out that amount with the museum staff), they get a key to unlock a full-size walnut Armadillo (which we'll chain up somewhere in the wild). And not just any full-size walnut Armadillo—walnut Armadillo number 1, the first and original. You might even be able to delude yourself into thinking it could be worth big money someday. This year's Design After Dark will be at RedLine Galleryon January 22. Save the date and don't be a skinflint.
DESIGN AFTER DARK PART 2: HORSEHEAD CRATING COMPANY
Clovis and Darnell were hanging around the shop over the past week as we made our object for this year's Design After Dark so they decided to get into the fray with a piece of their own. Not that they were invited to participate in the event, or that they bothered to tell anyone involved that they were planning to make a donation. No matter, they said, they'd just donate something and crash the party in late January for some free booze, snacks and mad b-boy styling on the dance floor. And here it is (what it is is anyone's guess). We do know it's made of steel, forming plywood, latex, polyurethane resin, leather and Brilla's Kong, stolen from the old girl while her folks were out of town. Our offering, with more information on the event, is on deck.
