FORMING PLY IN THE WILD

FORMING PLY IN THE WILD
We love the look of buildings under construction, pre-cladding, with the innards and underthings exposed. And scaffolding, shoring, concrete forms, construction elevators: all the temporary exoskeletal devices that help the thing get made but inevitably get peeled away when they're no longer needed. That's partly why we're drawn to forming plywood as a fine furniture material. It's beautiful and hardy but rarely seen out in the built world, just briefly in the world under construction. We snapped these shots of the forms for the entry ramp of the new parking complex at the Denver Botanic Gardens. The renderings of the finished garage show a smart, green-roofed structure that's consistent with the Gardens' mission. And the ramp under construction is a great piece of temporary sculpture.

SHEEP 2-DOOR 2-STEP

SHEEP 2-DOOR 2-STEP
Alright so maybe we should cut back on the GIFs and, oh, invest in a video camera? But really, video is so 20th century. Lo-fi stop motion GIFs? They are the future. Sure, they are the future of the past but retro-future seems very today, if you know what we mean. Look for this piece in our production catalog soon. It's a winner, we're sure. Thanks to Mike L. from MD (no, not Mike Larabee from MD, another Mike L. from MD) for ordering up this sheeping beauty.

WE BELIEVE THAT CHICKENS ARE THE FUTURE, TEACH THEM WELL AND LET THEM LEAD THE WAY

WE BELIEVE THAT CHICKENS ARE THE FUTURE, TEACH THEM WELL AND LET THEM LEAD THE WAY
So the Tillman brothers from Horsehead Crating have a thing for chickens (and for making animated GIFs). They like their looks, they like their sounds, they like their scent, and they like their eggs. The taste of their flesh? Never. Little dinosaurs, they say, with little dinosaur brains and delicious dinosaur eggs. So what does any of this have to do with DoubleButter, fellas? The boys won't say, specifically, except for vague hints about a new DB product that will solve all of our problems. And what problems are those, boys, ours or the planet's? Darnell: "Shit, yeah." The catch? To get them to share the new shit with us Clovis says we need to bring them on board as official DB employees. Both of them. Full time.

THE ORIGINAL SURFBOY

THE ORIGINAL SURFBOY
Meet Finn Yates Rose: Surfboy number 1. Conceived (we think, but really how would we know that?) and raised (so far, anyway) on a solid walnut Surfboy bed. Just a couple weeks old and already working for DoubleButter. Thanks to justifiably proud father Jedd for shooting and sharing the sweet shots of the family. Pure goodness, all around.

NOS REALMENTE DEVERIAMOS APRENDER FALAR O PORTUGUES
We should, really, learn to speak Portuguese and find a way to get to Porto. Google maps is hardly a legit way to travel but the mailing address on the site of this lovely magazine, Attitude, shows a ridiculously lovely spot. Who knows what goes on in there but the good folks were kind enough to include a shot of our Crane Bench in their latest issue. Does that mean they love us enough to let us crash in their offices during an unannounced visit? We'll find out as soon as we can scratch together the airfare.

THREE OUT OF FOUR

THREE OUT OF FOUR
Dexter's dad, Mike Thornton, threw another Man Party last night and invited the Horsehead boys to snap a few portraits of the assembled rabble. Apparently the boys asked the crew to flash the DB sign and most, though happily not all, complied. Sadly, the boys didn't get invited to the Ladies Party down the block since that crew was even better looking. Next time.

ROADRUNNER, ROADRUNNER: GOING FASTER MILES AN HOUR

ROADRUNNER, ROADRUNNER: GOING FASTER MILES AN HOUR
Darnell and Clovis from Horsehead Crating have been hanging around the shop snapping photos over the past week as we built a set of walnut Roadrunners. The Horsehead boys are principally crate builders - good crate builders - and they had no real idea how we make these chairs. Now they think we're totally nuts. They get the pinned mortise-and-tenons we use to make the side profile - old-school strength, sweet details - but after watching the high-stress madness and endless cussing from the poor sap on the router table, they say they'll be coming around less from here on. Thankfully the boys don't own a video cam (though they are borrowing one for a product testing bit we'll be shooting soon) so the animated gif just shows a happy little set of photos, no sound, no router table, no sailor-mouth.
